  1.                        Citation Database Manager
  2.                        =========================
  3. !Citation is a database manager which allows the storage, searching, 
  4. sorting and formatting of citations for direct output into technical 
  5. papers. It should prove useful to anyone involved in writing papers which 
  6. require extensive lists of references.

  8. I have always found that collating citations proves to be the most 
  9. tedious and error prone part of scientific paper writing. Furthermore 
  10. each journal dictates that its citations should be in a (generally 
  11. unique) specific format so that when one re-submits a paper to another 
  12. journal all the citations have to be re-formatted. !Citation handles 
  13. output in any format specified by the user so that once a Set of 
  14. references has been selected from within the database, the output format 
  15. can be altered ad nauseum. Selection of citation sets is facilitated by 
  16. author/subject/keyword searching as well as plain old manual selection.

  18. Bulk importing of references from any text-type file is also supported so 
  19. that one can collect references, say on your Psion/Pocket book or any PC 
  20. as you go along, for later addition to your reference database. Data is 
  21. stored in standard RISCOS directories so that it is easy to build up 
  22. libraries of different references and use them in !Citation by simply 
  23. dragging them to the iconbar icon. It also makes backup of such a 
  24. valuable commodity a doddle (so no excuses).

  26. I have long used a general purpose database for my references but this 
  27. eventually proved too limited for such specific use. I noted the packages 
  28. are available for other platforms ("Papyrus" for the PC and "Endnote" for 
  29. the Mac - at a price!) and tried to interest several software houses in 
  30. providing a similar application for Acorn machines, believing this to be 
  31. a commercially viable opportunity - but to no avail. So I eventually got 
  32. round to writing one - and here it is. I hope you find it useful.

  34. In this program I have tried to make extensive use of the drag and drop 
  35. facilities offered by RISCOS and not available on other platforms. As 
  36. well as bulk drag'n'drop import, text can be freely dragged in and out of 
  37. various fields for editing in other applications. Also the "Export icon" 
  38. (green arrow icon, top right of main viewer) allows dragging of author 
  39. names directly into your paper and !Citation works out the appropriate 
  40. format eg. "[Dawson, 1989]", "[Radulescu et al, 1995]" or "[Smith & 
  41. Jones, 1901]".

  45. This software is supplied "as is"; no warranty, express or implied, of 
  46. the merchantability of this software or its fitness for any particular 
  47. purpose is given. In no circumstances shall the providers of this 
  48. software be liable for any damage, loss of profits or any indirect or 
  49. consequential loss arising out of the use of this software or inability 
  50. to use this software. Support will be provided only to registered users 
  51. on a "as needed" basis.

  53. Having said that, the author would welcome bug reports, suggestions, 
  54. praise etc... Registration costs a measly...UK£15 or foreign note 
  55. equivalent (Endnote for the Mac or Papyrus cost far more..!) and this 
  56. entitles you to free upgrades, support etc (by Email otherwise a nominal 
  57. media charge will be levied). A two week period of grace is allowed to 
  58. evaluate this program thereafter the user should register or delete the 
  59. application.

  61. If other types of bulk importing are required eg. directly from MedLine - 
  62. I would be happy to look into extending the import module.
